This week’s Splendid Spoon Review is brought to you by Emily Chen (@healthifulbytes). She’s a junior studying Computer Science at MIT with a hearty appetite for good food with friends, good times and good food reviews! Below is her review of Splendid Spoon after over a year of trying it.
I don’t know about you, but I’m a sucker for food reviews. You know the person that meticulously screens through yelp reviews and knows before sitting down at a restaurant what they want to order? Yep, that would be me! I’m also the kind of person that scans through multiple blog reviews and watches many different taste test review videos on YouTube to know what flavor of a certain product to get (in fact, this was the motivation behind my IGTV taste test review series on instagram).
Today I’m going to take it further and write the food review I wish I had when deciding whether to try out Splendid Spoon. *Spoiler Alert: You may have been able to guess that I generally have a positive opinion of Splendid Spoon (or else I likely wouldn’t be rating it on this Splendid Spoon blog), but you should know that I’d never EVER break the one central cornerstone that all good food reviews must abide by: honesty, ie. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the fact that I have been a Splendid Spoon fan for over a year now and have tried my fair share of soups, bowls, and smoothies.
Nonetheless, I’m here to share the good, the bad, and then, since I have a soft spot for reviews that include ratings, I’ll also share my favorite go to smoothies and soups so that you can be sure to customize your order to include them if you think it would be fitting (this is a matter of empowering you to make your best foodie choice, and I’m here to support it)!
Let’s cut to the chase 🙂
Splendid Spoon delivers cooked meals that are either ready to be eaten, or just a few microwave minutes away from being ready, straight to your door*. Even as someone who loves grocery shopping, as a junior in college, busy times do not bode well with long commutes to the grocery store, so having ready made meals is a godsend when I’m rushing out the door for a 9am lecture or when I only have a 30 minute break for lunch between classes.
*I will qualify this by the fact that usually the smoothies and soup bowls will be delivered frozen (I’m assuming to ensure that they stay fresh during the delivery!), but if you keep them in the fridge, the smoothies will be ready to be consumed and the soup bowls will also then be microwave ready by the next day.
Health is so complicated sometimes so I like to keep it simple. I count nutrition by the number of colors I see in the bowls and soups, and by the number of ingredients I recognize on the ingredients label, and Splendid Spoon honestly never fails to pass my ingredient check. Simple as that.
For the quality of the ingredients and the amount, $95 for 5 breakfasts and 5 bowls is actually a pretty good deal when compared to other campus food options I have available in the Cambridge, MA area where MIT is located. Breakfast smoothies that don’t have added sugars AND are also supplemented with protein and fats to keep me full for longer generally run in the $7-$10 range. Lunches that are healthy and filling will generally run anywhere from $10 up, and even then, I have to factor in the hassle of commuting to a specific location and the cost of time and added stress.
The not so Good:
Anything has its pros and cons, and for me, it goes down to the specifics that certain soups and smoothies do not satisfy me personally (then again I do have a pretty big appetite so you can take this with a grain of salt 🙂 ). Think of it like dating: I’ve learned over the months what soups, bowls and smoothies I love most. This is also why I’m going to leave you with me top 3 go-to smoothies and bowls (I’m giving you all the freedom to either double up on those, as I will sometimes do, or venture out and start your own spooning adventure!)
My Top 3 favorite Smoothies:
Banana Flax Smoothie: This was my first ever Splendid Spoon Smoothie and it rocked my world (or as much as food can 😀 ). Unlike most banana smoothies that can be almost too sweet and heavy, this one has a kick of freshness from the lemon juice that really brightens up my mornings! Plus it has probiotics which I’m always looking to include into my diet where I can.
AB&J Smoothie: This reminds me of a classic PB&J combo and I’m all for it. It’s creamy and filling, and if I have time, I love making a smoothie bowl out of it and adding some plain greek yogurt, banana coins, and some more seeds for that added crunch!
Blueberry Coconut Smoothie: Okay for those of you who are looking for a more subtle start to the morning, this one’s for you! I was surprised how much I loved it the first time I had it because sometimes coconut is simply too heavy for me. Rest assured the blueberries complement the hearty coconut so well. It’s lower in sugar than the other smoothies, but still got that hint of a sweet blueberry pie 🙂
My Top 3 favorite Bowls:
Sweet potato Quinoa Bowl: I was not expecting to love this one as much as I do. It’s an unassuming bowl, but the addition of sesame oil and mushrooms just hits that umami spot for me! Whenever I’m craving asian food — which, let’s be honest, is almost everyday — this satisfies that craving!
Lemon Wild Rice and Broccoli Bowl: Another unassuming bowl that is now a staple every time I get my Splendid Spoon deliveries! The wild rice has a nice chewy texture and the lemon just adds so much freshness that I feel even more energized and don’t fall into a food coma post lunch.
Coconut Curry Rice bowl: I didn’t think I was a fan of coconut curry until I had this bowl, but the seasonings are just so spot on! The rice is a bit more tender than al dente, and the kale (wilted but still maintaining that bite) and chickpeas really work in harmony here to create a balanced meal that always leaves me craving more! I’m not sure if this is meant to be a take on an Indian curry or a Thai curry, but either way, I’m loving it 🙂
